As County Supervisor
  • A convention center hotel in Des Moines that will be connected to the Wells Fargo Arena and Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center that will offer visitors a world class hospitality experience and bring more conventions, sporting events and attractions to Central Iowa.
  • Collaborated with local and county officials and volunteers to create a Miracle League baseball diamond so that all children can take part in the game of baseball.  The Urbandale Miracle League diamond will be at the Urbandale little league fields.
  • Successful economic development projects have been undertaken with Bob playing an integral part with; Wells Fargo, Wellmark, Kemin, EFCO, Fawn Mfg and many others.
  • A trunk sewer project was undertaken, with the City of Johnston in collaboration, to improve a growing part of the community and eliminate pollution into the Des Moines River.
  • A free medical clinic was begun and successfully operated at the Eddie Davis Community Center in Valley Junction with county funding playing a key role.
  • Polk County and the City of West Des Moines have begun a collaboration to assist homeless families by providing housing units and case management to those families. This program has one of the highest success rates in Iowa.
  • Bob provided leadership in getting new homeless shelter, Central Iowa Shelter and Services, built in downtown Des Moines.
  • Bob has played a key role in the development of quality of life matters in our metropolitan area. He has had a hand in the Wells Fargo Arena, Hy Vee Hall, the Science Center, Asian, Italian and Latino Festivals, the Riverwalk, street improvements in Highland Park and on Ingersoll as just a few examples.
  • Bob worked with the Urbandale Caring Action Network (UCAN) to start up a minor home-improvement program for the needy and elderly in Urbandale.
  • A new phone and computer system has been installed, with Bob playing a key role, in the Women’s Resource Center; a shelter for battered women. This has improved services to these women and has allowed the dedicated staff to be more efficient and responsive.
  • Bob assisted with the funding and start up of new Foundation with parents at Dallas Center Grimes High School.

  • Clive and West Des Moines opened the first ever collaborative Joint Fire Station.

  • WESTCOM, the emergency communications network for Clive, West Des Moines and Urbandale was conceived and put into action.

  • Clive maintained the lowest property tax levy in the metropolitan area.

  • Clive and Windsor Heights collaborated on a joint fire and rescue district; offering paramedic service to the service area…the highest level of care available.

  • Walnut Creek Little League Park became a collaborative private-public park.

  • Innovative mock-City Council meetings were initiated with 8th graders at Indian Hills Jr. High and 6th graders at Crestview Elementary for Clive’s Youth in Government program.
